Choosing a payment gateway for your South African online store

PayFast, Yoco, Paystack and Stripe all let you accept online payments, but they're not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on how you actually do business.

Who your customers are

If you're selling almost entirely to South African customers, a locally-focused gateway with strong EFT and local card support is usually the smoother experience. If you expect international customers too, you'll want a gateway built with cross-border payments in mind from the start.

How you already take payments

If you already use a card machine or point-of-sale system from a particular provider, staying within that ecosystem for online payments can mean simpler reconciliation and one dashboard instead of three.

What your customers expect to see

Some shoppers hesitate at checkout if they don't recognise the payment provider's name. A gateway that's well known and trusted locally can reduce abandoned carts, even if a lesser-known option is technically just as secure.

There isn't a single "best" gateway: there's a best gateway for your specific store, and we help clients work through that decision as part of every e-commerce build, rather than defaulting to whichever one we're used to.
